Learn the fundamental and practical aspects of drying and firing of refractories

Course description
This course is an introduction to the field of drying and firing of refractories. It first addresses the basic concepts of drying and firing, including techniques to determine heat treatment schedules. Next, the firing behavior of the major refractory compositions are discussed, from raw material selection to microstructure development to final properties.
Who will benefit?
Engineers, managers, contractors, purchasing agents, furnace operators, maintenance supervisors, and technicians who are involved in the manufacturing, marketing, research and development, or consumption of refractory materials will find this course beneficial. A high level technical or engineering background is not essential to take this course, although technical professionals will find the subject matter informative and useful.

Instructor bio
Joseph Homeny is technical director of the Edward Orton Jr. Ceramic Foundation, Westerville, Ohio. He holds a Ph.D. in ceramic engineering from Pennsylvania State University and M.S. and B.S. degrees from Rutgers University. He has industrial refractories experience in the research laboratories of the J.E. Baker Company and North American Refractories Company, and industrial glass experience at Owens Corning. Prior to joining Orton in 1992, he was a professor in the ceramic engineering department of University of Illinois. Homeny is active in the refractories and advanced ceramic committees of ASTM.
This course was held on Tuesday's and Thursday's between 11 a.m. -12:15 p.m. for 15 sessions (~19 hours of instruction). The first session started on February 6.
